Newlyweds from Burton upon Trent have become this week’s Charity Champion ‘ring’ leaders after asking for donations rather than gifts at their wedding and raising £1,130 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.

Jenny and Mike Sweeting, who recently tied the knot at Warwick Castle, were inspired to support Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity on their special day after their daughter, Elki, had life-saving surgery.

At just 10-months-old, Elki was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot – a form of congenital heart disease, which sees four structural abnormalities occur within the heart. A few weeks later, Elki received open heart surgery to correct her condition and needed to be placed on life support.

She spent two weeks being cared for by the hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, followed by three weeks on Wards 11 and 12 (Cardiac Unit), but now two-year-old Elki is doing really well, which motivated mum and dad to show some love by merging their marriage with fundraising.

Creative Designer Mike said: “The care Elki received and the support we were given by Birmingham Children’s Hospital was incredible. Each and every member of staff was inspirational and we were never in doubt that she was in the best hands.

“We therefore didn’t have to think twice about asking for donations at our wedding – we have everything to thank the children’s hospital for. Our friends and family were really generous on the day and we were chuffed to have raised over £1,000. It’s the best feeling in the world to raise so much money for such an amazing hospital!”

Annie Eytle, Acting Events and Regional Fundraising Manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, added: “We’re so glad to hear Elki is doing well and we’re incredibly grateful to mum Jenny and dad Mike for choosing to say thank you to our world-class hospital in this really special and unique way.

“The money they have raised will help make a big difference to our brave young patients, and their equally brave families, all across our hospital.”
