My job role is leading the field of interventional cardiac catheterization. I have introduced hybrid procedures at BCH, and, together with the cardiac surgeons, we are working to expand the role of the hybrid approach in the treatment of children with congenital heart disease. Also I am the lead in designing the new cardiac catheter lab and the cardiac hybrid theatre.
I am responsible for the direct management of cardiac services, aiming to maximise available finance and utilise resources effectively for the benefit of providing a high quality service for our children and their families. This means I work with the whole team to identify and provide the support needed by the medical and nursing teams to deliver their roles.
I work across the Cardiac Unit with the whole team, leading and developing nursing clinical and professional knowledge. Education of nursing staff is paramount to advancing the skills of the nursing team. I also assess and monitor our patients as well as supporting parents who need to meet the changing care needs of their child.
I am responsible for delivering an effective nursing service within the Cardiac Outpatient Department and monitoring the service to improve the clinic experience for the child and family. I also provide a leadership role to the nursing team and work closely with other professional colleagues to ensure the delivery of clinical care in the out-patient service is high quality.
I am the first person who meets and greets the child and family and acts as a contact person for booking and arranging appointments. I am also a telephone contact for enquiries and identify whe a caller needs medical/nursing advice. I ensure the smooth and safe running of the clinics and make sure all staff are provided with the vital information required for an out-patient visit.
My job is to help co-ordinate the many different aspects that make the department work efficiently such as dealing with requests, booking appointments, sending out reports etc. It can vary on a day to day basis, you never know what will happen. As a department we try to make sure that patients are made to feel welcome and there visit to the hospital is as comfortable as it possibly can be. I would say that my job is made a lot easier by having very helpful and experienced staff around me. It’s very pleasurable for all of us seeing patients getting better.
I am one of a team of four Liaison Sisters who aim to support, educate and give information to patients, parents and families. We see the families at diagnosis, which can be antenatal, and give them the information they need to understand the heart defect their child has. We explain the pathway of treatment the child will follow and act as an advocate for the patient. We work very closely with our medical and nursing colleagues to strive towards achieving a smooth patient journey. Our role sometimes takes us into the community to assist with health planning for our children.
I am one of the team of three consultant heart surgeons at BCH. We carry out close to 600 heart operations per year on children ranging from premature babies to teenagers. One of us is always available 24 hours a day. We are also closely involved in looking after the children following their operations in the intensive care unit.
My role covers a group of wards and departments including Cardiac services, PICU, Theatres and Liver Services. I am responsible for the operational nursing management in the Directorate, making sure all the children and families we care for receive excellent standards of care, and have a positive experience during their time at BCH.
My role is variable and depends on the Units need. I have many years clinical experience and I support nurses at the bedside. I also ensure the smooth running of PICU on a day to day basis by co-ordinating the admissions and discharges with the Consultant in charge of PICU. I also offer support to families on PICU.
My role is to ensure the safety and well-being of all children who come to Angio theatre, acting as their advocate at all times, and allowing their experience to be as calm and stress-free as possible. I also assist the surgeon/clinician during all operations and procedures, working together as a team to ensure the child’s operation runs smoothly and successfully.
I'm the friend everyone needs in hospital. I work closely with the children to play, help with development and to hold their hands when you need it!
I help the children to settle into the ward, explain what is going to happen, give medicines, and do tests on patients throughout their stay. I check in throughout the day to make sure the children feel alright and have everything they need.
I love working on ward 12, I meet new people practically everyday and help to make the children feel better after major operations. As part of the teaching team on the ward I help to bring a sense of continuity and normality to the patients. Every day I deliver teaching activities tailored to the needs of the individual child; this is sometimes done in collaboration with their home school and I try to make lessons motivating and fun so the child can take their minds off all the medical procedures. Teaching on the ward also serves as a comfort to parents who find it a relief that their child’s education can continue whilst they are in hospital and they feel that the child is not missing out on the social interaction and enjoyment education brings.
My role in cardiac services is to oversee cardiac wards, ensuring the provision of a safe effective and high quality environment for children, young people and their families. I work closely with the ward managers to provide visible and accessible clinical leadership so our children get the best possible care.
