Our Department

We are a regional centre for Cancer, Haemophilia and Stem Cell Transplant. The Unit is also one of 2 national centres for Retinoblastoma (Eye Cancer) and one of 4 national Experimental Cancer Medicines Centres in the UK.

The unit treats all types of childhood cancer and a wide variety of blood disorders. We see around 200 new patients each year across the West Midlands and beyond.

Sadly a small group of our children will need our support through their end of life care. However it isn’t all doom and gloom and there is nothing more pleasurable than an adult visiting the ward years after treatment to introduce us to their children.

Come and watch the children on a Monday morning; baking cakes with the teachers in the room your donations helped to fund while their chemotherapy treatment is being infused by the pump you helped to buy, and watch the nurse giving chemotherapy who was trained in cancer care with the money you gave.

How you can help

The Oncology Unit needs funds to allow them to carry on saving the lives of severely ill children. Any donations can make a big difference.

Your donation could help bring comfort by providing toys and a better healing environment for the children and families during their stay.

You may also support fees for important staff training or even help to raise money for much needed specialist equipment such as infusion pumps and high dependency monitors.

From 50p from someone's pocket money to a couple of hundred pounds from a sponsored run it all makes a huge difference to the department and its family of patients.

Bobby's Story

Hannah

Bobby loves playing football. Sadly, in July 2009, Bobby was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.

Following a relapse he is expected to have a bone marrow transplant later on in the year.

"The work that is carried out here each and every day is amazing and the staff are even more amazing so please show your support! You can make a huge difference to Children like Bobby."
Lisa, Bobby's mum

Your donations have bought:

  • Hundreds of infusion pumps and drip stands over many years.
  • Wheelchairs and specialist buggies for older children who need support for a while.
  • Blood pressure monitoring machine, cardiac monitors, oxygen level monitors and digital thermometers.
