The West Midlands Regional Laboratory
for Newborn Screening in based in the Department of Clinical
Chemistry at Birmingham Children's Hospital. At 5-8 days of age
all babies in the West Midlands are visited by a midwife who
collects a small amount of blood from a heel prick and makes
blood spots on a special card. These are sent to our laboratory
for testing. We test them for a range of biochemical
diseases that babies can be born with where it is very important to treat early to prevent
serious and irreversible disease.
