Explosion 2: NEWADVANCED DIPLOMA IN SYSTEMIC SUPERVISION

The Advanced Diploma in Systemic Supervision forms part of the Birmingham Training Programme in Systemic Psychotherapy and Systemic Practice.  This one year course is designed to facilitate trainees to achieve registered status defined in the 2nd edition of the AFT, RED BOOK as follows:

A registered supervisor is a qualified Family and Systemic Psychotherapist who is registered or eligible to register with UKCP as a Family and Systemic Psychotherapist and is able to:

  • Supervise the clinical work of those people training for qualified family therapy status on an accredited course.
  • Provide supervision to qualified family therapists as part of their continuing professional development (as described in UKCP registration criteria).
  • Provide supervision of teams and staff working with families and networks or individuals wishing to work with a systemic orientation.

Systemic Practice and Family Therapy Training

A training programme over four years for practitioners qualified in the helping professions.  Professionals may apply to join the course at years 1, 2 or 3 depending on previous, equivalent training.  Progression from one year to the next requires successful completion of the previous year.  The training programme comprises:

CERTIFICATE IN SYSTEMIC PRACTICE
Requires completion of both first and second years

Year 1◊ – Introductory Course
Focuses on theories and practices that enable practitioners to understand problems, recognise resources and create and maintain solutions.  Local and national speakers on a range of topics across the age range and agency base.  Usually held on Thursdays at Parkview Clinic, Moseley, Birmingham.  Course runs from November to June.

Year 2* – Intermediate Course
Focuses on participants own agency work with families and other relationship systems.  The emphasis is on conceptual and practical skill development, and includes coursework.  Usually held on Wednesdays at 208 Monyhull Hall Road, Kings Norton, Birmingham.  Course runs from November to June.

◊ If you have completed a foundation course with another institution in the last 5 years, you can apply directly for the Intermediate course.

* If you have relevant experience, practice and training, you may apply for the Intermediate course through the APEL procedure which means you can bypass the Introductory Course.  Forms and guidelines below.

MSc in Systemic Psychotherapy
Years 3 and 4 comprise a two-year part time course validated by University of Birmingham as a Masters in Systemic Psychotherapy.  The course leads to qualified status through the Association for Family Therapy as a Systemic Psychotherapist.

The course takes place at Parkview Clinic where, in addition to a programme of academic study, course members see clients under live, taped and reported supervision.  Trainees have an honorary contract with CAMHS as a Systemic Family Therapist in Training.  This course runs every two years with the next intake for Year 3 in 2010.
