Retinoblastoma Genetics

Retinoblastoma Genetics

Many parents have too much on their mind about their child's treatment to think in much detail about the cause. Others will worry that they have heard it can be genetic. In practice many retinoblastomas happen as one-off events and will never appear again in the family. The clinical genetics team is here to try and make this information more understandable and answer the questions relevant to your own situation. It is rarely necessary to address these questions in the early days after the diagnosis of retinoblastoma and we are happy to try adapt any time-scale to your needs.

The Retinoblastoma clinical genetics team is based at the Birmingham Women's Hospital, about 4 miles from the Birmingham Children's Hospital

The two members of the team are Dr Trevor Cole and Miss Sue Carless. Although we are unable to attend all of the Retinoblastoma clinics we will try and make contact all new families within the first couple of months of the diagnosis being made. We can offer to arrange to see you during part of your follow up at the CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, or att one of our clinics in Birmingham or alternatively put you in touch with the genetics team nearer to your home.
