17/10/19 – Advanced Surgical Management with Cadaveric Workshop – Course Director: Guirish Solanki/Andy Garnham

Location - Keele Surgical Training Centre, David Weatherall Building, Keele University, Newcastle Under Lyme, ST5 5UB

Times - 8am - 6pm

This is a whole day advanced surgical management course. The intention is to provide the surgeon with both technical and non-technical skills and knowledge in reduction of the impact of environmental factors that lead to poor outcomes. Mr Tim Graham Head of School of Surgery and Mr Andy Garnham Lead Trainer for the Non-Technical Skills in Surgery (NOTSS) will emphasise how human factors, communication failures and errors play a role in worsened outcomes. The development of an expert team vs a team of experts lies at heart of improving outcomes. Preparatory material will be made available.

The technical demonstration by expert neurosurgeons to the various cranial and spines approaches used in Neurosurgery will follow.  The cranial component included surgical approaches to the anterior, middle and posterior fossa as well as surgery to the skull base. The spinal component covers the anterior and posterior approaches to the cervical spine, craniocervical junction fixation and correction of basilar invagination. A practical section on instability and stenosis with fixation and augmentation of the spine is demonstrated with newer kits to help with these techniques in paediatrics.

Local Accommodation near the Surgical Centre is included in the course price for developing countries.

Course Fee: £300. Half price for Delegates from developing countries (includes shared Accommodation).

24/10/19 – Neuro-Oncology Course – Course Director: Dominik Sturm/Guirish Solanki

Location - ICC, Meeting site, Birmingham

Times - 2pm - 5pm

This is a half a day update course on molecular biology for neurosurgeons and surgical management on a number of complex conditions. Neuro-oncology has made amazing strides in recent years including the introduction of molecular biology classification into the WHO classification in 2016. Many of the conditions commonly treated by paediatric neurosurgeons now have better defined classifications and a more streamlined pathway for care. Dominik Sturm and colleagues in Heidelberg have been at the forefront of the molecular biology revolution and along with world class neuro-oncologists, Researchers like Prof Richard Gilbertson from Cambridge and neurosurgeons have come together for us at the ISPN and have put together a course with updates in neuro-oncological surgery including molecular biology diagnosis and applications to management. A must for anyone treating brain tumours in their practice.

Course Fee: £100. Half price for Delegates from developing countries
