Complete up to 100,000 steps during Mental Health Awareness Week from 10-16 May and you will help us to get One Step Closer to changing the lives of up to 100,000 children and young people living with mental health issues across Birmingham.

The mental health of children and young people has taken a battering in the past year. On top of all the turmoil and challenges of growing up, they have faced wave after wave of uncertainty. Cut off from school, isolated from friends and afraid of the future, COVID-19 has intensified existing mental health problems and created new ones.

Let’s show our young people we’re in their corner, so they can take One Step Closer to achieve their dreams.

How your support helps:

In October 2020 we launched a campaign in aid of Forward Thinking Birmingham – our Trust’s unique mental health service for children, young people and young adults (0 -25-years-old) – called Fight For All The Feels to tackle the city’s growing youth mental health challenge.

By taking part in One Step Closer, your fundraising will help to fund a brand new, youth mental health model of care delivered by Peer Support Workers. Aged between 16 and 24-years-old, each of our Peer Support Workers will all have their own lived-experiences of mental illness and be from the same communities and backgrounds of the people they will support.  Set up your JustGiving page here

FAQ

What is a Virtual Event?

With a virtual event there is no set location. You do it wherever you want, and complete at your own pace. There will be many other people completing their virtual steps across the region during Mental Health Awareness Week (10-16 May), we just won’t all gather in one place.

What do you mean by evidence?

You will be completing it on your own (or a socially distanced in a group size recommended at the time by the Government guidelines) and in a location of your choosing. Therefore to earn your t-shirt you need to submit evidence that you have covered the distance.

What kind of evidence do you accept?

Evidence can be anything that proves you have covered the full distance of your virtual event. For example screenshots from tracking apps or photos of your smart watch. You can even show us your written training log.

Where do I submit my evidence?

To submit the evidence that you’ve completed your One Step Closer distance, simply email it to [email protected] with the subject title ‘One Step Closer evidence’. You can also put your evidence on your JustGiving page and send us a link to it. That way all your sponsors will see it too.

What format should my evidence be in?

Evidence should be uploaded in the form of a screenshot/photo.  Accepted formats are jpg, jpeg and png.

Does it matter where I do my steps?

You can do your steps wherever you like, as long as you can show evidence of them. Start where you are. Do what you can. Do what makes you happy.

Is there a time limit?

Your steps must be completed between 00:00 on 10 May to 23:59 on 16 May. You can do a bit each day, every other day, or all on one day. However you choose. Just record your evidence and submit it all together once completed.

Can I run One Step Closer?

Yes, you can also walk if you’d prefer.

Do I have to complete the full distance at once?

You can either submit evidence for multiple distances that equal your One Step Closer distance overall, or complete the whole distance at once. If you finish One Step Closer over more than one day, you will need to submit multiple pieces of evidence that add up to the full distance.

What if I can’t take part on the specified dates of a time-specific event?

If you are unable to run on the specified dates, please email [email protected] and let us know about your situation. We’ll be able to work with you to agree on alternate arrangements so you can still earn your completion t-shirt.

Is there an age limit for One Step Closer?

There is no age limit for Virtual Events. Any participants under the age of 16 should complete the distance under supervision of a parent or guardian.

When will my t-shirt arrive?

Your t-shirt will be dispatched once your evidence has been submitted and verified. Shipping times vary depending on your location. You’ll receive a confirmation email to let you know when your evidence has been approved.

Do you offer refunds?

We do not offer refunds once purchased. Please ensure you are able to complete your One Step Closer distance when signing up, as we are unable to offer a refund if you change your mind or can’t complete the distance.

How should I train for One Step Closer?

We recommend that you make sure that you have sturdy footwear and that you make sure they are worn in before you start your challenge. You don’t want to be getting blisters from new footwear.

Your training will depend on how you choose to complete your challenge and your current level of fitness. If you need some guidance to find online resources that can help, please email us at [email protected]
