News Brave Beth Inspires Butcher A butcher from Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire, is this week’s Charity Champion, after raising a ‘meat-raculous’ £3,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity in honour of his daughter’s exceptional care. Diagnosed with a rare condition called Bicoronal Craniosynostosis after birth, where the skull fuses too early, Peter Smith’s daughter, Beth, has had several life-saving operations at Birmingham Children’s Hospital to reduce the pressure on her brain. Inspired by the hospital’s ‘amazing work’, the devoted dad turned to fundraising to say thank you, initially encouraging donations at his butchers and selling homemade beer, cider and wine to friends and family, in return for a donation. Most recently, Peter also organised a pub quiz and raffle, which saw Emmerdale star Dominic Brunt (Paddy Kirk) draw the raffle – including a £200 tandem flight experience prize with Mark Leavesley, the pilot from Running Wild with Bear Grylls. Peter said: “We can’t thank Birmingham Children’s Hospital enough for the team’s amazing work. They saved our daughter’s life and she’s now doing incredibly well – she’s one happy baby! “It’s wonderful and quite overwhelming how many people have helped me to raise money for the hospital’s charity. I’m now planning a clay pigeon shooting event and hope to smash my £4,000 target!” Annie Eytle, Acting Events and Regional Fundraising Manager at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, added: “It’s inspirational to hear how the world-class care our hospital provides has inspired Peter to fundraise and we’d like to say a huge thank you to Peter for his on-going support – we can’t wait to hear all about his next event! “We treat over 90,000 children and young people from across the country every year, and the money Peter has raised so far will make a huge difference to the lives of our brave young children and their families all across our hospital.” For more information about Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, visit www.bch.org.uk, email [email protected] or call 0121 333 8506.
