History

Birmingham Children's Hospital has offered the very best specialist care for sick children for more than 150 years. It's the generosity of our supporters, the determination of our leaders and the bravery of our patients that make it all possible – and every day you help us do even more, even better.

Our young patients have benefited immeasurably from the astonishing progress our fundraisers, volunteers and partners have enabled us to achieve since Dr Thomas Heslop set up the Birmingham and Midland Free Hospital for Sick Children in 1862.

Through the creation of the NHS in 1948 to our current COVID-19 Appeal to raise funds to help us continue to support our NHS heroes and the children and families in our care, you've been there. Your kindness and the expertise of our brilliant staff continue to bring hope and smiles to sick kids and their families, and save lives.

Our history is growing every day, with every child we treat. Read our latest news to see how your support is transforming sick children's lives.

We will always need your support to give them the care and support they deserve. There are many ways you can help write our history:

  • Set up a fundraising event
  • Find how you can volunteer with us
  • Donate to an existing appeal

Transforming experiences using Virtual Reality – Matthew’s story

Being in hospital is an incredibly worrying time for our sick kids and this anxiety can mean our expert doctors and nurses sometimes struggle to perform simple procedures. A number of successful trials across our hospital has proved using virtual reality (VR) technology can significantly decrease stress levels and reduce discomfort during minor medical procedures.

    Gifts in Kind

We often receive donations of toys and games for our patients, particularly around the festive seasons such as Easter or Christmas, and whilst we are incredibly grateful for these, we do have some guidelines around what we can or cannot accept.

    Clothing Donations and Recycling

We’ve partnered up with Collection 4 Clothes, a local clothing collection company, who collect donated good quality clothing, accessories, shoes, linen & bric-a-brac on our behalf. We don’t have any charity shops on the high street, so this is a way of donating your old belongings to us from the comfort of your home.
