Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a serious sight threatening condition which can affect all premature babies. Frequent surveillance of the retina is important to ensure that any treatment given is done within an important time frame. The Eye Department at Birmingham Children’s Hospital provides a leading service within the local region in providing ROP screening and treatment.

Retinal imaging provides a higher level of care when examining, monitoring and treating premature babies with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).

There is currently no imaging system capabilities provided at our Women’s Hospital site. By purchasing and implementing this camera we would be able to:

-         Capture retinal images to assist in diagnosis and management of ROP patients

-         Use images in multi-disciplinary meetings used across the region

-         Have images which can be used for monitoring progression – this can be years of treatment in certain cases
