A local golf club organised a charity golf day to raise more than £16,000 for sick kids at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, as thank you for serving the community.

Great Barr Golf Club, captained by Alan Bell, has chosen Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity as its charity of the year and has been fundraising throughout the past few months. Most recently, Alan and his club spent time planning a Golf Fundraising Day to raise as much as they could for their chosen cause.

The event consisted of an 18-hole shotgun start golf competition, in which the teams tee off simultaneously from different holes, with £500 on offer for the team finishing with the highest points, and further prizes for second and third place, nearest the pin, longest drive and others

The teams consisted of club members and local businesses in and around Great Barr, including Ultraline, Sovereign Refrigeration and Ultimate Golf, who were all keen to help make a difference. A total of 22 teams paid £300 to take part, which went straight into the charity pot, and they were also encouraged to fundraise more, which many did.

It was a fantastic day of golf, with top cuisine provided from chef, Pascal Parize. As it progressed into evening, a charity auction was held, with plenty of sports memorabilia on offer, including a signed Tyson Fury boxing glove, Floyd Mayweather boxing shorts, signed Aston Villa shirt and ball, as well as a family golf stay at a top golf resort in County Mayo, Ireland. An impressive 88 people attended the fundraising day, helping to raise the amazing final total of over £16,000.

Alan Bell, club captain, said: “We are so proud to have helped support Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity for the amazing work they do caring for the children and families of our community. It’s clear the hospital touches many lives, as we were inundated with local businesses wanting to come together to give back to a wonderful cause, and credit must go to them for the amount raised. I have chosen to consistently support the Children’s Hospital throughout my captaincy and look forward to further fundraising for the young patients.”

Miranda Williams, Head of Public Fundraising at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “Golf Days are a brilliant way to raise money for charity, as they often bring together a community of people wanting to do good. We’re thrilled to have been chosen as Great Barr Golf Club’s charity of the year and for the brilliant effort of all involved. Everyone at the hospital and charity is incredibly grateful.”
