In 2011, we raised £2m for our Children’s Heart Appeal to create the UK’s first ‘hybrid’ cardiac operating theatre, the most advanced heart unit in the UK. 

Helping little hearts

The world-renowned cardiology unit at our hospital is one of the largest and busiest in the country, delivering innovative specialist care to newborns, children and adolescents with congenital heart disease.

In 2011 we hit target on our £2m Children’s Heart Appeal to create the UK’s first ‘hybrid’ cardiac operating, the most advanced heart unit in the UK.

The state-of-the-art theatre allows different complex heart procedures to be carried out, including open heart and keyhole surgery, on the same patient at the same time, saving them from the risk of multiple operations. This has massively increased every patient’s chance of survival.

Thanks to generous donations even more patients from across Birmingham, the UK and even Europe are now receiving life-saving heart surgery at our hospital more quickly than ever before.
