Developing Hospital Environments
Emergency Department
Our Emergency Department is in urgent need of transformation. We’re raising money to help expand its footprint, creating facilities for our most vulnerable patients, improving clinical areas, and introducing new technology to help our colleagues deliver the world-class care our patients deserve.
Creating an environment that meets demand
As the only major trauma centre for children and young people in the Midlands, our Emergency Department was designed to care for a maximum 40,000 patients a year.
Today, staff work around the clock delivering expert treatment to over 67,000 sick kids annually – 67% more patients than was intended when the department was last updated in 2012.
As a result, there’s not enough bed spaces and those which are available are typically not fit for purpose. Patients and families can experience long wait times.
Our Emergency Department has now reached a point where its lack of space is creating a barrier to the treatment and care we can offer – and we believe our children and families deserve better.

Big improvements, bigger impact
Our Emergency Department Appeal will help to expand the existing footprint.
Working with our Trust and using NHS funding, a multi-phase scheme has been developed to update and improve the entire department.
We need to raise £2m to help accelerate and enhance this project.
Your donation will help us:
- Complete the new waiting room and clinical spaces with child-friendly features such as artwork on the walls and ceilings.
- Create much-needed facilities for some of our most vulnerable patients, such as a Changing Places toilet, a baby change/feeding room, a sensory room, a dedicated safe space for mental health patients and a family room where doctors can speak with family members in a calm and supportive space.
- Purchase new, life-saving equipment such as a mobile x-ray machine. The existing resus equipment is close to its end of its life and is no longer the state-of-the-art technology the department needs as the only designated paediatric trauma centre for the region.

Help us to deliver our world-class care
We’re grateful to have already received pledges of £1m from businesses and philanthropic individuals and organisations, meaning we have just £1m left to raise to make these improvements a reality.
Can you help us transform our Emergency Department team’s capacity to deliver the world-class care they so desperately want to?
