Bereaved Son’s UK Run Makes Great Strides For Sick Kids

A bereaved son who ran the length of the UK in memory of his parents has made great strides for sick kids, raising over £3,300 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.

Laurence Denis, from Leicester, raced over 850 miles from John O’Groats to Land’s End in just 24 days, raising funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital and three other charities after tragically losing both of his parents just a few years apart.

Laurence sadly lost his mum in 2020 after a 10-year battle with neuroendocrine cancer. Just three years later, Laurence’s dad suddenly passed away after a lifelong struggle with heart disease, leaving Laurence spiralling and struggling to cope from grief.

Reaching his lowest ebb, Laurence turned to running. What began as a way of managing sleepless nights quickly became a source of healing, giving Laurence structure and purpose to his days, as well as a deep sense of connection to his parents.

Laurence remembered that before his mum passed away, she had wanted to donate toys to help the brave patients at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Inspired, Laurence decided to support the Children’s Hospital and three other causes close to his family’s hearts, making a difference and honouring his parents’ kind-hearted legacy.

After initially running coast to coast across England in 2024, Laurence wanted to up the ante by taking on the ultimate UK running challenge for his chosen charities. The dedicated runner set out from the northernmost tip of the Scottish mainland, feeling full of enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, an early injury set Laurence back. Laurence had to ease off his planned pace, but he was committed to finishing his journey, and after 24 gruelling days of running, he raced through the night to reach Land’s End. He arrived at his destination completely drained, but also full of pride for completing his challenge.

Laurence raised over £3000 for our hospital

Laurence said: “The run pushed my body beyond its limits, but it was nothing compared to the spiral of grief I went through. Overcoming this challenge was a real ‘wow’ moment for me and I’ve never felt so proud of myself.

“When I saw the amount I’d raised, I was speechless! I’ve been to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and seen the difference they make to the kids. Anything I can do to make being in hospital less daunting for children is worthwhile.”

Laurence is also determined that his challenge will give hope to others who have been through tough times: “I’ve come from the lowest point but I’m still going.”
