Over 2,600 magical moments made in first six months of our MediCinema

Our MediCinema opened its doors six months ago, creating thousands of precious moments as we’ve brought the magic of cinema to over 2,600 people.

Supported by our £1m MediCinema Appeal, this special space has held more than 120 screenings for 2,628 patients, families, guests and staff, creating thousands of special memories and moments that allow our sick kids to simply be children.

Our 84-seat MediCinema is the largest of its kind in the UK and has been specially designed so as many patients as possible can experience the magic. Since opening, 13% of inpatient visitors have attended in their hospital beds, while 40% have come along in wheelchairs. The space has also hosted tailored events for twelve different support groups, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for patients and families.

Major blockbusters screened at our hospital include Hoppers, Toy Story 5, Moana and Spider-Man. Every viewing has offered precious moments of joy and escapism, allowing our sick kids and their families the chance to get away from hospital wards and spend quality time together.

More than a trip to the cinema

One patient who’s felt our MediCinema’s magic is ten-year-old Charlotte. Charlotte was recovering from life-changing brain surgery when she attended one of our MediCinema’s first screenings. After watching Hoppers with her mum, her experience became much more than a trip to the cinema.

Her mum, Jaimee, shares: “It had been a tough time for us, so the thought of going to the movies was just the perfect escape. She often talks about this day, not the surgery or anything else that happened in the hospital. We made some core memories thanks to MediCinema.”

Another parent also told us: “My youngest son, age five, has been struggling so much to understand his eight-year-old brother being so ill in hospital. Going to the cinema allowed him to feel safe, relaxed and confident in an environment he understands. It really helped him to transition as he navigates this new landscape for our family.”
