In 2007 we hit target on our £3m Burns Centre Appeal to create the first standalone paediatric Burns Centre in the UK

The Burns Centre is the largest unit of its kind in Europe, making our hospital an international centre of excellence

Opened in February 2008, the purpose-built centre treats babies, children and young people up to the age of 16 years old from across the MidlandsIt is also part of the Midlands Burn Care Network and receives referrals from all over the country such as Thames Valley, South Wales and the South West of England.

Everything needed to treat a burn injury is located within the centre. It has its own operating theatre, a high-dependency unit for patients who need constant care, an adolescent room where young people can relax and a bright spacious playroom for younger children.

It also has two assessment rooms where injuries are assessed or dressings are changed. One room contains a Laser Doppler, this measures how deeply the burn has penetrated the skin by placing a camera over the burn.

There is also an outpatient area for children with minor injuries or who need to return to have dressings changed.

Raising the standard of paediatric burns care on a global scale, the centre was only made possible thanks to generous donations from charitable trusts and foundations, local businesses and individuals as well as an incredible gift left in the Will of Marjorie Denton Heath.
