We believe our world-class care should start at our front door. That’s why we’re transforming our main entrance into a bright, open and child-friendly space which helps to reduce the fear and anxiety of our patients.
Stopping our patients from feeling afraid
Last updated nearly three decades ago, our old main entrance was cramped, dull and unwelcoming and didn’t reflect the world-class care that takes place beyond it. We know that 54%* of children are afraid of going to hospital and our families tell us our old entrance was stressful to navigate and didn’t put them or their children at ease.
Our £3m It Starts Here Appeal is changing this.
Our hospital should feel magical and no child should feel intimidated about walking through the front door.
We’ve worked with patients, families and staff to develop our new interior, introducing:
- Natural light, a sense of space and bringing the outdoors in
- Spaces to eat, sit or relax before, during or after appointments
- Entertainment, play and distraction opportunities for patients
At the heart of our new entrance will sit our ‘jewel in the crown’ of this transformation – our 2,200-litre Hope Aquarium. Filled with approximately 61 fish species and over 300 fish, our aquarium will create a sense of awe and wonder, while providing an opportunity for education and social interaction for our patients.
